First Grade News, August 22, 2011

Notes and Reminders
• Don’t forget to be studying the word lists that we send in your child’s Reading Homework folder. Several of the children have finished all of the lists and have gotten their ice cream reward. Remember, they need to be able to read the words on the cards, not spell them.
• We are using the Fundations Phonics Program. One of the strategies that it teaches is tapping out a word to read or spell. If your child has difficulty with a three letter word, ask them if tapping it out would help.
• I have begun to teach the class Reading strategies using Beanie Baby characters. Last week we met Eagle Eye Eagle who reminds the children to use their “eagle eyes” to look at pictures for clues when they come to a word they don’t know. This week we will meet Lips the Fish and Stretch the Snake. I will be sending home a paper for you to use at home with your child that explains these strategies.
• Don’t forget to be working on the PTO Fundraiser and remember our School Cookout this Friday.

Notes and Reminders
 Remember the Family Cookout is coming up. If you will be coming to eat with your child please return your form with the money so we can send you the tickets. 
 I am adding something new to the Discipline Chart in your child’s folder. Before your child gets to a yellow card they put their name on the board for the first misbehavior and add a check for the second. After these steps comes yellow. This week we will begin to put an N on your child’s folder if he/she got a name on the board. We will put a check if there were two misbehaviors. That way you will know if your child is having some behavior difficulties that don’t result in a yellow card. I hope this will be helpful to you.
 As always, please contact me if you have questions or concerns.

We’re working on…

Literacy Stations

I have been training the children for the last two weeks on the different types of “stations” they will be doing this year. This is a time when they practice the concepts we have been working on. During this time my assistant and I will be having Guided Reading groups with the children. When they are not working with us in a group, they will be working in their stations with a partner.

Beginning next week we will be launching  the stations with the children and showing the children how to work independently. They will have work that must be completed, placed in the correct side of their folder and turned in at the appropriate time. Hopefully within 2 weeks the children will be independent enough to work on their own so that we can begin reading groups. Our goal is to help them grow as first graders.
