School has started!

August 23rd, 2015

So excited to start another year with some amazing 5th graders!  We are working on inquiry skills by designing experiments.  Students are to think about how they can blow up a balloon using a plastic bottle.  (They may not use their mouth to blow it up.)  It has been fun watching students get excited about their ideas.  This week we will be writing procedures for their question they have posed.  Then we will get to test their ideas, analyze what happens, and share their conclusions.    Come to Open House on Tuesday, August 25 from 5:30-6:30 to see some the experiments.

“How Children Succeed”

August 12th, 2015

Great book for parents and teachers. Check out his website.

This book has taken research from economists, educators, psychologists, and neuroscientists to state what matters most to a child’s success is if the child can develop the following qualities: Persistence/Grit, Self-Control, Curiosity, Conscientiousness, Zest, Social Intelligence, Gratitude, and Optimism.

Summer Reading

August 5th, 2015

It is NOT TOO LATE to READ a book before school starts.  Impress your teacher with books that you have read.  A good book for higher level students is called “Words in the Dust” by Trent Reedy.  The book is about the struggles and strength of a young Afghani girl who has a cleft pallet.   An interesting side note about the author is that he is in the military and was stationed in Afghanistan during the war.  Another book that I recently finished is called “Islander” by Cythnia Rylant.  It is about a boy who wants to find his purpose in the world and has some magical things happen to him that change his life.  HAPPY READING!
