Meadowbrook’s Cubs on the Run 5k
First let me tell you how our race got started. From the years 2006-2010 our school had the highest obesity rate in Haywood County. I felt as if I was personally letting our kids down, I did not want our school to be known for that title. So I began to ponder what else I could do since I only had the student two times a week for thirty minutes each time. So I started sending newsletters home to parents giving them ideas for healthy foods and exercises for families. We were still the highest. I made sure my students where moving as much as possible during class and I began having family fitness nights once a month to get families out and moving. But still, we had the highest obesity rate.
The beginning of 2010 school year, PTO approached me about a 5k. I completely jumped on board, I had just ran my first 5k earlier that year and was very excited! This would be a perfect way to help raise money, particularly for our physical education classroom and bring light to our community that childhood obesity is a growing health concern . Mr. Kirby and I developed Cubs in Training for students in grades 2-5. We began meeting after school to train for our big event the 5k. Currently we have 75 students who participate and many wonderful parents who help by volunteering their time for running club!
Our numbers of obese students continues to decrease each year and through our training and 5k race students are learning to love running! Students are vigorously active for a good 30 minutes after school and they are gaining a sense of accomplishment that only something as difficult as running your 1st 5k can can give you!
Monies we raised from 2011 went to putting in a 9-hole disc golf course on our campus. This course is used in Physical Education classes, by our families here at Meadowbrook and others in our community who are trying to find affordable fun ways to be active! The monies raised from 2012 went into new gymnastics equipment to be used in Physical Education class.
