Miss Dutton’s Class Routines and Procedures

Here is some information that will be helpful to you as you and your child make the transition to Third Grade. Please look over it and review it with your child. Please also keep this for future reference. If you misplace this packet it can be found on our classroom blog at .   After you have read through it, please SIGN AND RETURN the orange sheet at the back.

Arriving at School

Upon arrival at school, students will go to the gym. I will pick the students up from the gym and we will walk back to the classroom together. On the way, we will stop and pick up breakfast. Please make sure your child is on time to school each day.

If your child needs to bring money to school for any reason, please be sure that it is placed in a sealed envelope or baggie and labeled with the students name and purpose. You may send in the money in your child’s Homework.

Reading Homework and Log

Students will have homework Monday- Thursday. It will consist of 20 minutes of reading, 5 minutes of reflective writing on what they read, math, and spelling. Students are always encouraged to read more than 20 minutes a night as well as over the weekend. My goal is for reading to become a passion and not just a “must” for homework. I will not check spelling until Friday so if there is an afterschool activity on certain days; it is completely fine to double up on other days.

Homework Folder

Each night the homework folder will be sent home containing Spelling homework and any class or school information. This folder needs to be returned each day. This is also a great place to put notes for me. (You can also write me notes in the agenda, as I initial those daily)

Graded Papers

Graded papers will be sent home on Mondays with the past weeks papers. Please review these with your child and sign the cover page. I will collect all graded papers for the 9 weeks and then send them home at the end of the 9 weeks for you to keep.

Each day your child will write down his/ her homework and upcoming projects, tests or quizzes in the JVES Agenda. I initial the planner each afternoon.  Please check your child’s planner each day to make sure they are doing their homework and fulfilling their responsibilities. Your child will also record their behavior for the school day in their agenda. Please also make sure to sign/ initial in the agenda that you looked over their homework assignments as well as their daily behavior. The behavior will be recorded by color as seen on the next page: (a label will be put in the front of the students’ agenda as a reminder for what each color means)

Red– OUTSTANDING! (going above and beyond with behavior, class work, responsibilities, and friendship)

Orange– Great Job! (doing the right thing almost all of the time with no reminder

Yellow– Good Day! (doing the right thing without Miss Dutton having to ask

Green– Ready to Learn (everyone starts on this and can move up or down, if you finish the day on green is it great!)

Blue– Think About It (warning with no consequence)

Purple– Teacher’s Choice (walking at recess in 5 minute increments/loss of privilege)

Pink– Parent Contact (note or phone call home)

*Please note- students can move back up after being moved down. I want them to realize their behavior or decision was not a good one and think about what they can do to fix it. Moving back up allows them to see that even if we don’t make a good choice we can fix our behavior. Please also note that for the first several weeks of school yellow will probably be the highest level given. This is just because the students are learning procedures, routines, classmates, and they are getting accustomed to Third Grade.

Each day we will have snack time. Students are responsible for bringing in their own snack.

Our lunch schedule will be from 11:15-11:45.   Parents /guardians are always invited to have lunch with their child- you may choose to meet us either outside of the classroom or in the cafeteria. If you sit in the cafeteria, please sit at an empty table or at a booth. Visitors cannot sit with any children unless they are the parents /guardian or family member of that child.

A copy of the class schedule will be sent home with your child during the first week of school. The schedule may be altered during the year; however you will be notified if it changes.

If your child is to go home a different way than normal, I must have a written note or phone call. Please do not email me during the day with the changes because I cannot always check my e-mail throughout the day. The best way to let me know of a change is to write it in the agenda or to call the office.

If you know your child will be out ahead of time, please let me know so that I can put together their work.

** Please make sure to label your child’s personal items (coats, book bags, lunch boxes, pencil boxes).

Rules, Rewards and Consequences

During the first several days of school, the students and I will make up the class rules. I want them to take responsibility in creating their own rules, that way they are more likely to take pride in them and follow them. A copy of the rules will be sent home the first week of school to be read, signed, and returned.

We will have individual and whole class rewards for positive behavior. Individual students may earn money to use at the school store once a month. There are also several “non-tangible” rewards that the students can earn.

If a student’s clip is moved down to Purple, they will walk recess in 5 minute increments up to 15 or they will lose a privilege. If their clip is moved to Pink, I will contact the parent with a note or phone call.

Specials Schedule: Our activity schedule rotates each week. We will have computer lab twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I will send a copy of our specials schedule home with you.

As always if there are any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. Let’s work together to make sure this is a great year!!!
