Classroom Handbook

Phone: 646-3448 (Bethel Elementary School)

Dear families,

A good learning experience is built on a cooperative effort between parent, child, and teacher. With your participation we can look forward to a productive and fun year together. The purpose of this handbook is to inform you of procedures and materials used in fifth grade. Fifth grade is a growing year which provides children with many new challenges. I hope this handbook will familiarize you with our expectations for the upcoming year.

Daily Schedule

Lunch 12:30 – 1:00

Monday  – Library 1:45 – 2:30

Tuesday – Art 11:05 – 11:50       Computer Lab 1:45 – 2:30

Wednesday – PE 1:45 – 2:30

Thursday – Music 1:45 – 2:30

Friday – PE 9:00 – 9:30

I realize there is a lot going on at the beginning of the school year, but I do expect all supplies to be purchased and brought to school by Monday, August 25th. If you cannot afford to provide supplies, please let me know so that I can get the supplies your child will need. If you are willing to donate extra supplies to the class, please send them in.

  • 4 spiral notebooks
  • 2 marble sewn composition books
  • Pencils #2
  • Blue or black ink pens
  • Colored pencils
  • 2 pocket folders (2 total)
  • Pencil holder
  • Backpack
  • 3 ring binder (1 to 1 ½ inch)
  • glue sticks
  • scissors
  • optional:  dry erase markers

The school will be open at 7:30 every morning. Please do not drop off your child before 7:30 because no one is here to supervise them. All students arriving between 7:30-8:00 need to report straight to the gym or to the cafeteria is they need to eat breakfast. When the 8:00 bell rings, the 5th grade teacher on duty will escort all fifth graders to the fifth grade hall. No student is allowed to roam the halls or go to their classroom before 8:00. Any student who does not follow this school rule will be sent to the office for disciplinary action.

The school day begins at 8:05. All students who arrive after 8:05 are tardy and will need to report to the office. Please make every effort to have your child at school on time. When they are late, they not only get behind, but they also interrupt the other students who are already hard at work.

Parents: For safety reasons, please come by the office to sign in and get a badge everytime you visit our school (even in the morning if you need to walk your child to class). The only time a badge is not necessary is if you are eating breakfast with your child or attending an afterschool event or program.

If your child will be getting home differently than they normally do, you MUST send a note to school indicating this change. Otherwise, we will send your child home his or her normal way.

Car riders are dismissed at 2:45.

Bus – 1st load is dismissed at 2:55.

Blue Paw

All students who meet the following requirements during the nine weeks will earn a special activity or fieldtrip.

  • Have only positive visits to the principal
  • Follow classroom rules
  • Complete all assigned class work and homework (NO zeros)
  • Always be on time to school (NO unexcused tardies)

My goal is to meet with all parents in the first few months of school, after that, I schedule conferences as needed. Please let me know if you are interested in scheduling one. I will try my best to accommodate your schedule. Thanks for your consideration!

Behavior and Expectations

Students are expected to show appropriate behavior in our classroom, other areas of the building, on the playground, on the bus, and all field trips. We will spend several days during the first week of school brainstorming and developing our classroom norms and procedures. Check back later for what your child and his/her classmates agreed to during our first class meetings of the school year!

Toys and Games

Please leave all toys and games at home. They become distractions and will be taken and held until a parent conference. The only exception would be if they are bringing items like balls or jump ropes to play with outside. These items will be kept in their book bag until recess time.

Cell phones are major distractions and are not really needed at school. If your child needs to bring one, it must remain turned off and in their backpack. If they are out without permission, they will be taken and held in the office until a parent or guardian picks them up.

Volunteers are always welcome in our classroom. If you are interested in helping in the classroom or doing at home projects, please let me know. Some possibilities include, but are not limited to, working with students, bringing in a treat for our holiday parties, or accompanying us on a field trip. The possibilities are endless!

Your time is a treasured gift. I encourage you to participate in the classroom.

You are always welcome and even encouraged to come by our classroom. Please use this time to watch your child in action, eat lunch with them, or even volunteer. Don’t forget to go to the office to sign in and get a visitor’s badge prior to coming into the classroom.

Anytime your child is absent I must have a written note explaining the absence. Without a note, the absence will be unexcused. For everyday your child misses, they will have two days to make up the work missed. For more details, please see attendance guidelines in the agenda book.

Questions or Concerns?

Please contact me if any questions or concerns arise throughout the year. I cannot work on a problem if I am not aware it exists. You can reach me at the school at 646-3448 or by e-mail at

Please be aware that I usually do not answer the phone or check my e-mail during instructional times, therefore, I may not receive your voice mail or e-mail until after school each day.
