Hour of Code Week!!

Hour of Code Week

Coming Soon Dec. 5th-9th

Computer science opens more doors for students than any other discipline in today’s world. Learning even the basics will help students in virtually any career—from architecture to zoology. Just as we teach students how to dissect a frog, or how electricity works, it’s important for every 21st century student to have a chance to design an app or an algorithm, or learn how the Internet works.

90% of parents want schools to teach computer programming, and students love it

A 2015 Gallup poll found that 9 out of 10 parents want schools to teach computer science – so our children grow up not just using technology but learning how to create it. In fact, among low-income families, the majority of parents and teachers believe the computer science should be required for students to learn!

A survey of high school students shows that computer science ranks among students’ favorite subjects, behind only graphic design and performing arts. Now that computing is the #1 source of all new wages in the U.S., it’s important that every child should have access to learn computer science in schools.

Problem Solving Panthers

Last year, Riverbend students and staff worked hard to be Problem Solving Panthers and spent time each month focusing on a STEM activity.  This year we plan to expand our focus to STEAM and are eager to get our Library MakerSpace up and running.  Here are some highlights from last year of our Problem Solving Panthers thinking outside of the box while utilizing materials from our MakerSpace.

Summer Reading Challenge

Posted by: Erin Barker | June 18, 2014 | No Comment |

Our first Summer Open Library time was a success!! We had about 12 students and their parents in the library at various times from 10am-12pm.  Students were look at books and reading with their parents.  They also checked out books to take home for the week.  It was an exciting experience to see many of these students eager to read and enjoying it.  Plus the family time spent reading with dad or Grandma was priceless!! We are doing great in our Summer Reading Challenge– “Reading of the World Record” sponsored by Scholastic.  So far as a school we have read over 132,000 minutes as a school!! We are ranked 162nd in the whole world!! Pretty good for our small school.  Just shows how great our students truly are!!  I hope we continue to have this exciting turn out all summer long!  And don’t forget to log those minutes!!
