Week of 9/26/16

Posted in Matter and Chemistry on September 26, 2016 by jpittaluga

MONDAY

  • Regular science – Students worked on a graphic organizer today to show the relationship between the different parts of an atom and then worked through an activity on drawing Bohr diagrams. Homework tonight is Atomic Math Practice.
  • Advanced science – Students finished working through the Bohr practice activity we worked on last week. After coming up with rules for drawing Bohr diagrams, students then had to fill in several on their own. Homework tonight is to watch the two videos on the periodic table. The first video is simply the instructions for the notes and the second video is actually the notes. I did go over how to do the notes in class, but if anyone doesn’t remember, there is a video to explain them as well.

TUESDAY

  • Regular science – Today we began talking about the periodic table and how it is organized. Students were given a periodic table for their notebook and a chart to fill in for notes. The periodic table can be found here – Periodic Table for INB and the chart for notes can be found here – Periodic Table Notes. The presentation for the notes can be found here – Periodic Table Notes Presentation.
  • Advanced science – To reinforce their understanding of the periodic table, students began working on an activity today that challenged them to determine how the elements from an alien planet might relate to the known elements from our planet. This activity can be found here – Alien Periodic Table Lab and Alien Periodic Table – Blank.

WEDNESDAY

  • Regular science – Today we finished the notes on the periodic table that were begun yesterday. Tonight’s homework can be found here: Periodic Table Practice.
  • Advanced science – Students were given the opportunity today to finish the alien periodic table lab that was begun yesterday. I also handed out and went over the element trading card project. The directions for this project can be found here: Element Trading Cards Project – Accelerated Science. Students may bring their own device to do research and may listen to music in class if they bring their own headphones.

THURSDAY

  • Regular science – Today I introduced the element trading card project and students were able to use the class period to work on their research. The project instructions can be found here – Element Trading Card Project – Regular Science. Each student was given 3 index cards to use on the project. They will also be able to work on this in class on Monday.
  • Advanced science – Students were able to work on their element trading cards today. They will also be able to work on them on Monday. The cards are due on Wednesday, 10/5.

FRIDAY

  • Both Classes – We will have a guest speaker today returning from Kids in the Creek to talk about the data that was collected and to discuss how scientists use the data to look at water quality.

Week of 9/12/16

MONDAY

  • Regular science – Students worked today on a foldable in which they had to differentiate between a physical and chemical property and a physical and chemical change. Understanding of the information in this foldable will help with the lab we are doing tomorrow. Please remember to have hair tied back and to wear appropriate clothing for the lab.
  • Advanced science – Today we began a lab in which students are looking at the rate of solubility. This 3 part lab has students looking at how much salt will dissolve in 100 mL of water under different temperatures. We completed two parts today and will complete the third part tomorrow. Students will be doing a formal lab write-up as part of this lab and we will work on that in class on Thursday. Please remember to have hair tied back and to wear appropriate clothing for finishing the lab tomorrow. DON’T FORGET – The Owl Recycling Factory letter is due tomorrow!

TUESDAY

  • Regular science
  • Advanced science

WEDNESDAY

  • Both Classes – We will be going to the Canton Rec Park today for the Kids in the Creek field trip. We should be back by the end of 3rd core.

THURSDAY

  • Regular science
  • Advanced science

FRIDAY

  • Regular science

Week of 9/5/16

MONDAY

  • No School – Labor Day

TUESDAY

  • Both Classes – We had a guest speaker today to talk about the upcoming Kids in the Creek field trip. My classes will be going on this field trip on Wednesday, September 14. Permission slips will be coming home either today or tomorrow.
  • Advanced science – Please watch the video for Physical vs. Chemical Properties and Changes. The notes should go on page 21 in your science notebook. (Page 20 will be the bell ringers for this week.) Be prepared to take a quiz on these notes in class tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY

  • Regular science – Today in class we worked on a lab investigation in which the students had to identify various substances as either an element, a compound, or a mixture. Since we were not able to finish in class, we will finish the activity tomorrow.
  • Advanced science – Today, we finished the last station of the investigative lab we began on Friday. Students also took a quiz covering the content from last night’s video. I then passed out the information for the first major project. This activity – Owl Recycling Factory Letter – is due next Tuesday, 9/13. If possible, please try to use the letter generator found at Read Think Write Letter Generator. On the last screen, you can “share” the letter with me and it will send it to my email. Use your name as the file name and fill my email address (jpittaluga@haywood.k12.nc.us) into both of the email fields. Finally, we began working through a practice activity for density. This activity can be found here – Density Practice Problems. Whatever was not completed in class should be completed for homework.

THURSDAY

  • Regular science – In class today, students updated the index in their science notebooks and then read through the current issue of Science World magazine. We will be in the lab tomorrow to finish the investigation we began yesterday and to begin looking at physical and chemical properties and changes.
  • Advanced science – In class today, students were given an opportunity to begin working on their Owl Recycling Factory letter. Please remember that Science in the News is due tomorrow and we will be in the lab tomorrow.

FRIDAY

  • Regular science – Today we finished the investigation on elements, compounds, and mixtures that was begun on Wednesday. After completing this activity and going over the answers, students took notes about physical and chemical properties and changes. The presentation for the notes can be found here – Physical vs. Chemical Properties and Changes Presentation and the notes can be found here – Physical vs Chemical Properties and Changes Guided Notes
  • Advanced science – Today’s lab was looking at the difference between physical and chemical changes. Students rotated through 8 stations in which they performed mini-experiments to investigate these differences.
