The Science Pitt Stop

Mrs. Pittaluga – 8th Grade Science

Week of 11/14/16

MONDAY

  • Regular science – Students spent time working on their notebooks today. They will be checked on Wednesday during the presentation by Mr. Newton Friday. I have uploaded three documents to Google Classroom that outline what should be in the table of contents as well as the words that should be in the index. Students were also given a molecular biology review packet that can be turned in as 10% extra credit towards the test grade. This packet MUST be turned in by Thursday in order to earn the extra credit.
  • Advanced science – Students spent time working on their notebooks today. They will be checked on Wednesday during the presentation by Mr. Newton Friday. I have uploaded two documents to Google Classroom that outline what should be in the table of contents as well as the vocabulary from the molecular biology unit that should be in the index.

TUESDAY

  • Field trip to Asheville – no core classes

WEDNESDAY

  • Study skills presentation by Ken Newton in both classes.

THURSDAY

  • Regular science – Today we went over the molecular biology tests. After going over the test, we began our study of water by going on a journey. Students took on the role of a water molecule and went through a series of stations that a water molecule may travel through. From this journey, they will write a story describing their adventures. The story is due by Tuesday, 11/22. The directions and rubric for the story can be found here – Journey of a Water Molecule. Just a reminder that I will collect science notebooks tomorrow.
  • Advanced science – We went over the molecular biology test in class today. Students can access this test from home through their PowerSchool/SchoolNet accounts. After going over the test, students then went on a journey as a water molecule as they moved through stations where water may be found. From the travel log of their adventure, students must write a story describing the journey. This story will be due on Tuesday, 11/22. Homework tonight is to do Science in the News (if it hasn’t already been done) and to watch the video on the distribution of water. It is found under science videos on the right side of the page and I have also put it up on Google classroom. Just a reminder that I will collect science notebooks tomorrow.

FRIDAY

  • Regular science – As we start our study of water, I first did a demonstration to give students an idea of how the quantity of salt water relates to that of fresh water. We then worked through a set of notes about where water is found on the planet. The notes can be found here – Distribution of Water Presentation and the worksheet for the notes can be found here – Distribution of Water on Earth.
  • Advanced science – Today, students first took a quiz on the video they were to watch last night. Following the quiz, I introduced a major project that students will be working on for the next two weeks. The details for this project can be found here – North Carolina River Basins Project. We will work on this in class on Monday and Tuesday next week, but the remainder of the work will need to be done outside of class. The final project is due on Friday, December 2.
