Week of 11/7/16

MONDAY

  • Regular science – Today, students did a cut-and-paste sorting activity related to the macromolecules webquest they did last week. I also passed out a study guide for the test students will be taking on Thursday. The study guide can be found here – Molecular Biology – Study Guide. this is due before the test on Thursday.
  • Advanced science – Students completed the building macromolecules activity they began on Friday. I also passed out a study guide (Cellular Energy Test Study guide) to help with preparing for the test on Thursday. Finally, there is an extra credit webquest posted to Google Classroom. Students who choose to do this assignment should have it completed by Thursday.

TUESDAY

  • No School – Election Day

WEDNESDAY

  • Regular science – Students were given time today to finish working on the macromolecule sorting activity we began on Monday. We then worked through a Kahoot to review for the test tomorrow. As a reminder, the test study guide is due tomorrow.
  • Advanced science – Today I went through a brief Powerpoint review (Cellular Energy Review) covering information we have been working on over the last couple of weeks and then the class played a Kahoot game to review. As a reminder, Science in the News is due tomorrow IF it is written, otherwise it can be turned in through Google Classroom by Friday.

THURSDAY

  • Both classes took the test on molecular biology today. The test was administered through SchoolNet so grades will be uploaded to PowerSchool by the end of the day.

FRIDAY

  • No School – Veteran’s Day

MONDAY

  • Regular science – Due to the long classes today, we were able to cover a large amount of material. Students took notes on photosynthesis and respiration and also did a lab on respiration.
  • Advanced science – Because we had a long class today due to 6th grade Greek Day, we completed a complex lab in which students had to set up and monitor a bioreactor to measure the carbon dioxide output of yeast.

TUESDAY

  • Regular science – Today, students read through an article on Newsela that relates to our study of photosynthesis. The link to this article can be found on Google Classroom. Homework tonight is a worksheet comparing photosynthesis and respiration.
  • Advanced science – Today, students read through an article on Newsela that relates to our study of photosynthesis. The link can be found on Google Classroom. Tomorrow, we will be consolidating the data that was collected from the lab on Monday to look at how carbon dioxide output relates to the amount of sugar the yeast were given. Homework tonight is a worksheet that goes through the importance of ATP.

WEDNESDAY

  • Regular science – Today, students completed a Venn diagram to compare photosynthesis and respiration. I then went over last night’s homework and collected it. Finally, students had time to finish working on their 3 card summary from the Newsela article they read yesterday.
  • Advanced science – Today, I consolidated the data collected from the lab on Monday and we talked about what it meant and how that relates to carbon dioxide output. I also went over the ATP worksheet that was last night’s homework. Student’s were given the remaining time in class to finish the Newsela article from yesterday. Anything not completed in class should be done for homework. I will be collecting Monday’s lab packet on Friday.

THURSDAY

  • Regular science – Today, students began a webquest covering macromolecules. The information for this webquest can be found on Google Classroom. We will be completing this webquest tomorrow.
  • Advanced science – Students completed a webquest today that covered the four big macromolecules – carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. The directions for this webquest can be found on Google Classroom. If it wasn’t completed during class time, it should be completed for homework since we will be using the information from the webquest on tomorrow’s activity.

FRIDAY

  • Regular science – Students had the opportunity today to complete the webquest they began yesterday. I also passed back the Cells Alive webquest so once they finished the macromolecules, they could complete Cells Alive if there were any errors. Finally, if the Cells Alive and macromolecules webquests were complete, students could complete the activities for the Newsela article they did on Wednesday.
  • Advanced science – Students began an activity today in which they had to build the macromolecules that they learned about in the webquest yesterday. They will be given time on Monday to finish up this activity.

WEDNESDAY

  • Regular science – Students were given a pop quiz on the law of conservation of mass today. After the quiz, I did a demonstration of a popular lab called elephant toothpaste.
  • Advanced science – Students worked through the elephant toothpaste lab activity today.

THURSDAY

  • Regular science – Students began working on an activity today to review the organelles of cells. The link to the interactive cell online along with the document where they can type in their answers is found on Google Classroom.
  • Advanced science – Students began a webquest today to look at the processes of photosynthesis and respiration. The document for this webquest can be found in Google Classroom.

FRIDAY (Short classes due to reading celebration)

  • Regular science – Students were given time to finish the Cells Alive activity they began yesterday.
  • Advanced science – Students were given time to finish the webquest that they began yesterday.
